Obituary

Daniel J. Russell died on March 20, 2018, at Toronto Western Hospital with family by his side. He was a human rights lawyer, an author of six books, and an individual in the truest and deepest sense. Dan leaves behind his beloved son, Jeremy (Charlotte); his wife, Aldina; a brother, David (Sue); six sisters, Diane/Jesse, Donna (Tony), Kathy (John), Lorrie (Mark), Lynn/Giggs, and Pat (Bill); and several nieces and nephews. He suffered from various chronic illnesses. My sincere and heartfelt sympathies go out to Jeremy and the family. I was just informed of Dan's passing. I met Dan at the YMCA, over 40 years ago where he acted as a basketball referee. I was a first time scorekeeper and Dan patiently made sure that I was able to keep up with the action. He was truly an amazingly kind, generous, and caring man who loved his son. I will miss him.

I had the honour of meeting Daniel earlier in 2018. He told me his story, and all the incredibly kind and selfless things he has done in his life. I am absolutely heartbroken to hear of his passing. I know all that he had struggled with, and I dearly wish I could have spoken to him one last time before he left. May you rest in paradise, my friend... You are sorely missed.

Sending our condolences to the family. The kindness, sympathy and charisma he expressed to everyone he encounter truly impacted everyone. The accomplishments that Dan had achieved signified his intelligence and talents which influenced others to reach for great heights. We had met Dan at the YMCA and without hesitation, he offered to help us with boxing techniques. His thoughtfulness genuinely reflected how he cared about others. Dan will always have a special place in our heart as we send prayers to the family.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear father and brother. Although my brother knew Dan personally, I did meet him at my brother's 50th. My sister and I also attended St. Rita's school with the Russell family. Lynn was in my class. I remember the family as very beautiful and very outgoing. My prayers go out to the whole family.

Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember the last time I saw Dan at mom's 80th birthday. He was gentle, sweet, and had kind words for all. I remember him speaking of his pride in Jeremy and his amazing accomplishments. He lives on in everyone that he touched.
