Obituary

OLGA POPOWYCZ (nee Romaniuk) Passed away February 4th, 2018 – just shy of her 95th birthday. “She’s something else” was how she was most often referred to. Born in Delatyn, Ukraine February 23rd, 1923. Left at the age of 21 with her husband and very young family, trying to escape the ravages of a terrible war, living in different countries in displacement and immigration camps. Finally arriving in Canada in 1950 after several years in Europe with the biggest hopes and dreams of settling to a new life and home. Being fluent in French - Montreal, Quebec was a logical place. She was most proud of becoming a Canadian citizen in 1957. To her surprise and amusement, she knew more about her adopted country than the average person who was born here. When her children were young, she read the Encyclopedia Britannica to learn English – to then be at the ready when help was needed with homework. She was quick of wit and had this clear, incredible and wonderful mind that was a joy to behold in someone of her age. As a history buff, if you were unaware of some historical event that she perhaps was wanting to discuss, she would promptly start educating you. She loved flowers, orchids in particular, along with classical music, pop culture, singing, a strong cup of coffee and good food. She had an easy smile and always wanted the low down of what was going on with the ALL family. Her most favourite pastime - keeping everybody that was around her on their toes! She had a full life and will be sadly missed by all she touched. Predeceased by her husband Dimitri and son Maurice. Loving mother to Walter (Cookie), Irene (Bob Lesniak), Adrian (Donna Gutzeit) Grandmother to Katrina, Stefan, Christopher, Melina, Natalia, Alexander. Great Grandmother to Daniel, Isla. Panakhyda to follow Holy Liturgy on Sunday March 18th at 11 am in the Chapel at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, 60 Richview Road, Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre would be appreciated: www.stdemetrius.ca/long-term-care
