Obituary

José Marçal dos Santos was born on December 26, 1931 in Valongo-Palhais (Sertã), Portugal and passed away peacefully at Toronto Grace Hospital on July 6, 2024 at the age of 92. He was the beloved husband of Ilda Pereira dos Santos for 62 years.

Pai was adored by his three children Victor (Patricia), Paul (Emily), Susan (Ian). He was a cherished Avô to his grandchildren Katharine (Jérémie), Alexander (Monica), Valerie (Mehdi), Madeline and Kalen, and a loving great-grandfather to Natalia.

Predeceased by his parents Manuel Marçal dos Santos and Maria Margarida, and sisters Maria Costa and Alice Alves, José is survived by his siblings Elvira Nunes, Abilio dos Santos, and Henriqueta Jesus Santos Batista.

All who knew José can speak to his warm presence, big laugh, and the ease in which he made friends wherever he went.

José immigrated to Canada from Portugal in January 1970 with the intentions of building a better life for his family, earning his trade as an electrician at George Brown College, and later working at Guild Electric and Ontario Hydro before retiring at age 65.  José was kind, caring and helpful–always willing to lend a hand to neighbours, friends and family and the Portuguese community to complete electrical work needed within their homes.

José had a great affinity for gardening and wine making. In the early spring he would start growing vegetables in the yard, tending to the plants throughout the summer.  In the early fall,  he would begin preparing to make wine with his brother Abilio and other extended family members. During his retirement, José would also spend many months of the year in Portugal with Ilda, where they would visit friends and family and tend to their fruit orchards.

The family extends deep appreciation to the entire Palliative Care team at Toronto Grace Hospital for providing outstanding care, ensuring our father was treated with dignity in his final weeks.

The visitation will be held at Cardinal Funeral Homes on Friday July 12, 4-8pm (92 Annette Street, Toronto), with the funeral service held on Saturday July 13, 10am at Saint Anthony’s Church (1041 Bloor Street West, Toronto), followed by the entombment at Prospect Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Health Centre or the Toronto Grace Hospital.

Descanse em paz eterna José dos Santos.
