Obituary

ADELA (ADA) HORHOTA Passed away peacefully on November 13, 2017 in her 89th year in the loving care of the Ivan Franko Home in Etobicoke.  Beloved wife of the late Marjan for 54 years, loving mother of Irene Ritch and George, daughter-in-law Margot and babycia/grandmother of Natalie. Born in Novouralsk where her Ukrainian nationalist father, Yuri Yanni, worked as an accountant, Ada was then raised in Novoukrainka, Ukraine, by her father and mother Paulina. Her childhood was shaped by the Second World War, which forced her family to leave their beloved country when she was just 15.  As refugees, Ada and her family moved between war fronts, and en route she lost her older brother, Stacio, and then father who was killed in a bombing raid on a displaced persons camp in the Italian Alps. Together, mother and daughter moved temporarily to England where they awaited immigration to Canada, which became their proud adopted home.  Initially living in Edmonton, Ada and her mother moved to Toronto where she met Marjan, the love of her life and who was respected in the Ukrainian journalism diaspora.  Later, she opened their home to host many visiting writers from Ukraine. They collaborated on the monthly Ukrainian magazine Novi Dni (New Days) -- Ada responsible for administration and ad sales and Marjan as editor. They also worked together for 15 years at the University of Guelph’s McLaughlin Library. Adela brought joy to many people’s lives, especially to her granddaughter, Natalie, and was generous with the disadvantaged. Friends are invited to the ‘panachida’ (memorial service) at Ivan Franko Homes Winston Churchill residence this Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at 3058 Winston Churchill Blvd, Mississauga. Funeral services will be held at the All Saints of Ukraine Chapel - St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre (1280 Dundas Street West, Oakville), on Friday Nov. 17th at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ada’s memory to the Ivan Franko Homes new ‘selo’, or ‘village’, building fund would be appreciated: (905) 820-0573. Arrangements entrusted to Cardinal Funeral Homes Annette Chapel (416) 762-8141; www.cardinalfuneralhomes.com. The family sincerely thanks the caring staff at both Ivan Franko residences and especially the team at the Royal York residence for the final weeks of Ada’s compassionate care www.ivanfrankohomes.com
